A grisly episode was recorded in March 1894 involving a woman, whose husband had gone outside thinking he’d heard a prowler in the middle of the night. Their small cottage stood alone about a mile to the east of Fellwood Green, and the neighbouring farmer soon met the man, telling him how the dogs on his farm had gone mad, growling at first and then howling, terrified. The farmer said he’d followed a tall shadowy figure through the fields and towards their cottage.

They’d suddenly heard screaming and the two men ran into the building and through to the bedroom, where they found the man’s wife with both of her eyes gouged out. She’d managed to tell them that someone had leaned in through the window and stabbed her eyes as she lay in bed. The man stayed with his wife while the farmer went outside shouting and swearing, challenging the intruder to a fight. There was no sign of anyone.

The day before the attack, the woman had walked up the Fellwood gorge to meet someone – many believed a mysterious lover. That evening her husband had found a large black feather on her pillow, and in the early hours of the following morning, the horrific incident had occurred. The farmer insisted repeatedly that her eyes had been pecked out. “It’s a crow’s work, that is, seen ‘em attack me newborn lambs!”
